How to Arrange Bedroom Furniture

Moving into a new place or re-furnishing a bedroom? Dig into the careful planning + think through the shopping that’ll be necessary. Poorly planned bedrooms can lead to an undesirable aesthetic, overcrowding, and bruised shins! Who wants that? Worry not; Greenhouse and our team of knowledgeable and friendly staff are here to help guide you through the process of arranging your bedroom furniture in an optimal way for your space and your lifestyle.

Your bedroom is an incredibly personal space, and you deserve an inspired and functional floor plan and the perfect bedroom furniture that suits all your needs- whether you’re getting ready for the day or getting ready for bed.

Bedroom Design - Start With The Bare Minimum

The bedroom is first and foremost, the room where we put our beds. But what are the other things we need to do in this room? Is it going to be a respite from the outside world dedicated solely to rest and relaxation? Does it double as an office or a classroom? Is it your preferred place to kick back and watch a movie? Working with all this can quickly become a mess, and it’s important to remind ourselves to start with the basics.

I find it best when starting these projects to think about my routines- how much time I’m spending in the space, and what I’m doing in that space. In other words, start by looking at the ways you need your room to function. The best way to make sure you have only what you need in a space is to think about how you’ll use it, and design around that.

Assess Your Space

Okay, so now you know how you plan to use your room and have an idea of what it is you need in that space. Now let’s look at your space as it is. Is it big? Small? L shaped? If your room is truly tiny, vertical storage, underbed storage, and a merciless edit of your belongings are your best friends. I personally think that regardless of bedroom size, everyone needs a bed, a nightstand, a set of drawers, and a lamp- you know, the basics.

Not everyone needs a desk or a seating area in their room, but we can all benefit from soft lighting before bed, storage space, and a place to put that nighttime glass of water. Even if you do have a larger room, using only necessary furniture helps with the flow and intent of a room. Every piece of bedroom furniture should serve some distinct purpose that makes sense with your space and lifestyle.

Bedroom Layout - Measure & Draw Out Your Plan

Don’t go out buying new bedroom furniture or even rearranging it just yet! The best way to make sure that all your bedroom furniture will fit before you go through all the trouble of moving it is to measure your space and measure your furniture. Once you’ve done that, you can grab a pencil and some graph paper and start drawing out your plan! Don’t worry; you don’t need to be an artist to do this. This is just so you can play around with your layout and find the optimal layout for your life without having to move around all furniture.

Regardless of how you do it, having a visual, to scale image can help you see what your options are, so you don’t need to do more back-breaking work than you need to. Start by finding a good place for your bed; I prefer the head of my bed against a wall with a walkway on either side. I find this practical for a few reasons, though it’s mostly because I find it easier to make the bed every morning when I can move around it freely. This placement is also better if you’re sharing a bedroom with a partner, or if you have a standard size square room and a queen bed. From there you can place bedside tables/nightstand on either side of the bed for a traditional, symmetrical look.

Now that you’ve figured out where you want your bed, you can figure out where you want your dresser. If you have a small bedroom, vertical + under-the-bed storage is going to be your best friend. For small rooms, tall chests like the Bamboo Six Drawer Chest or the Easton Chest optimize your use of space. If you have enough closet space, you may decide to put your dresser there, though, from apartment living, I’ve learned that small rooms tend to have even smaller closets.

If you’re just one person, you may decide to put your dresser next to your bed in place of a second nightstand. The most important things to consider when deciding your dresser placement is making sure there is enough room to open the drawers fully, and that it’s not blocking any windows, walkways, or doors.

Where Should I Place A Mirror In My Bedroom?

I love a full-length mirror in a bedroom to check my outfits before I leave for the day. Where on earth, specifically the bedroom, do you put that though? Feng Shue dictates that a mirror shouldn’t face the bed, and I agree with this for me personally, mostly because I don’t want to be startled by my own reflection when I wake up in the middle of the night. I like having it by the door if there’s room so I can always check one last time to make sure I’m presentable. Mirrors can also be used as wall décor at the head of a bed. If you have a small room, you can also use strategically placed large mirrors to reflect like and give the illusion that your room appears larger.

Keep The Room Feeling Spacious!

Speaking of small rooms, apartment dwellers, listen up! This one’s for you. Aside from the mirror trick, you can and should make the most of your vertical space. Not only can the use of this space provide additional storage, but it can help draw the eye upward, accenting the space you do have. Using furniture that has higher legs can also help create the illusion of more space. By elevating your heavier pieces of furniture, you can help create an airy feeling, even in small rooms.

This style of furniture also tends to appear more in scale with less spacious rooms. Keeping your furniture in scale with your space is important. That’s not to say that all your furniture needs to be doll-sized; but maybe opt for a 2 or 3 door sideboard that’s 4 or 5 feet long over the 4 door sideboard that’s over 6 feet long. Doing this will help prevent overcrowding; the small home’s greatest enemy in design and functionality.

Pillows & Other Decor

Only after you have your furniture squared away into their optimal places should you start thinking about accessorizing. I know, it’s the most fun part, but it’s also the one that should be put dead last. After all, it’s a lot easier (and less expensive) to change out your pillows than it is to change out your dresser. Pillows, plants, + paintings (or other wall art) are the necessary finishing touches that help pull a room together. While it’s important to leave some room to sleep, a throw pillow or two can help make a bed from drab to fab in the blink of an eye!

Ultimately when it comes to bedroom layouts, the most important thing is to figure out where the bed should go, and the rest typically falls into place. Sometimes the room tells you where to put everything, and sometimes you need to get creative. It can be easier to draw a few scaled layouts to get an idea of what will work best for you, but in the end, if you’re happy, we’re happy.
